Biography

Born Greenock; died 16 May. Landscape painter in oil and watercolour. In early life he had been a postman but turned to art. Although mainly self-taught, studied for a short time in Paris.
Married Helen D(qv). Began exhibiting 1885. Painted widely around Glasgow, particularly views of the Clyde and in the vicinity of Gourock. His strenght was in capturing the corruscations of the light on water, often with the peaks of Arran beyond. Like his contemporary James Kay(qv), he was knowledgeable about the many types of craft then to be seen on the Clyde so that his watercolours are accurate in detail, redolent of the white horses of the western Atlantic.
Lived in Greenock, Paisley, Skelmorlie and Glasgow. Won gold medal at the Paris Salon in 1901. Exhibited RA(16), RSA(54), RSW(126), RI(4), GI(133)& AAS. Represented in Glasgow AG, Paisley AG(10).
