Biography
Born Carlisle but died Edinburgh. Known as painter, illustrator and both in oil and watercolour with landscape being his preferred genre and most notably seascapes with crowded port scenes being his trademark. His influence was most highly felt in Scotland despite not being Scottish and he eventually settled in Scotland in 1855 having been very restless and flitting between residences. Was known for his difficult personality hence his relatively late election to full membership of the Academy in 1875. Elected ARSA 1856.
