BIRCH, S J Lamorna, RA, RWS, RWA (1869-1955)
Biography
Landscape painter in oil and watercolour. Born in Egremont, Cheshire, on 7th June 1869. He was self taught in art but did spend a year in Paris at the Atelier Colarossi 1895-96. S.J Birch took the additional name of Lamorna in order to distinguish himself. Much of his work was carried out in Cornwall, and often features river scenes. Perhaps this is connected to his love of fishing! He exhibited widely , establishing an excellent reputation, and his work was reproduced on a number of occasions. Elected R.W.S. 1914, A.R.A. 1926 and R.A. 1934. Died on 7th January 1955 in Lamorna.
