GOULD, John (1804-1881)
Biography
Gould was an important ornithological artist who became famous for producing books such as ‘A Century of Birds’, 1831-2. What is rather confusing is that he did not actually lithograph the plates which are known as ‘Gould’s Plates’ – the 2,999 large folio prints are produced from the drawings made by Gould and he never actually lithographed any plates himself. Taking a hand in the writing of most of his books, the compilation, publication and distribution of them, he left the lithography to another hand. His wife in fact was the first lithographer to work for Gould on the ‘Century of Birds’ and later lithographers include Edward Lear among them.
