Biography

Painter in oil of flowers, portraits and figure subjects. He took up painting professionally in 1888 and was trained at Glasgow School of Art and in Paris under Lefevre and Boulanger. At this time he developed an association with the Glasgow Boys with whom he is now identified.

His individual technique of thick and rapid strokes suggests rather than defines the texture and colour of flowers. He held a successful exhibition every year in Glasgow. He put importance on the beauty of colour, decorative effect, carrying power and the natural and realistic effect of the flowers themselves. His best work was done 1889-92, mainly pink yellow and red roses.
